If Writing is Talking...

Reading other people's blogs, stories, and books helps us to become better writers. We're somehow more prolific, more compelling, and more engaging as communicators. If writing is the talking part, then reading is the listening. And who couldn't stand to be a better listener?  Besides that, who wants to "listen" to someone who never lets you get a word in edgewise?

Believe it now or later, there is something to this karma and reciprocity thing.

I never thought about it like this before. It is one of those really smart obvious observations I wish I had come up with myself. All my life, my friends have called me a good listener and now I understand why I love reading different blogs. I was the kid in school who had her 'group' to hang with but if I saw someone being picked on or who seemed lonely, my heart really bled for them. I always went out of my way to talk with them and just be a listening ear. Sometimes I feel a little crazy on SheWrites and I know I can never respond to all the unanswered blogs and I feel saddness. All those thoughts and feelings waiting on the wall of the gym wearing the taffita dress and puffs sleeves...yes I know many would more the "hot chick" beating off the dudes but you get my meaning.

I can hang out with everyone until that guy comes to ask them to dance? I simply see a good blog and have decided to answer them as I go and in the same breathe knowing I should be writing my own.

If you are ever standing by the wall, tapping your toes to some ole school Madonna (before she got her Bristish accent) just call me over and we can talk trash about the 'mean girls' *wink*
p.s. thanks for teaching me how to spell-listener hehe

Hey, Joy,
Thanks. Actually, I only made the connection a few days ago, while reading another friend's blog. Isn't that funny? I have a similar personality to yours. I can pretty easily blend into most groups and conversations, but I also find myself very aware of those who aren't as socially inclined, the wallflowers, etc. I've been there, but as time has gone by, I've "blossomed" a bit, and found myself able to detach myself from the wall.
I think being a listener/reader makes us more personable and approachable, and people can relate to us easier when they believe that we can relate to them, because when we talk to them, we are actually engaging them, discussing things that they think about and care about. Not just doing all the talking/writing.
Like you, I see so many great blogs, but there's just not enough time in the day to comment on them all. I just get to the ones I can when I can.
Hahaha@Madonna before her British accent. Celebrities are so funny. I think the same thing about Tina Turner. She's from Tennessee. Where the HELL did that accent come from? Haha!
